The Jesuit Habit

This is what the Jesuit habit of a seminarian looks like.

  1. That's nice to see. Maybe the days of the few Jesuit seminarians dressed in street-clothes or grey or black clergy shirts and slacks is over....hopefully.

  2. Actually, the Jesuits never had a habit, per se. What you see in this photo is simply the Roman cassock, a wrap-around, common to all the colleges of Rome (albeit in different colours). The Jesuit rules said that they were to adopt the vesture of the local clergy. What was in fashion in Rome in the XVI century was retained by the Jesuits as an unofficial habit, although they were free to wear the clerical dress of the place where they were serving (egs. red cassocks in Japan).

  3. ^ I think some of us Jesuits ought wear the "unofficial habit" nowadays. In a world (and Church) lacking identity, a rooted and deep spirituality, and evangelism, I think that the religious habit and its theology is an important part of our tradition that needs be remembered and activated in the life of the Body today.

  4. Did Jesuits pre-council Vatican II wear a rosary as part of their habit and if so, hat was the nedal on it. I recall the Faithfulkl Companions of Jesus did wear a rosary and that they were based on the Jesuit Charism
