Glory of Catholic Belgium: Le Cardinal Mercier the Great

Know and love the good guys.

  1. You know, I'm not so sure about the 'great' bit. He was a supporter, indeed with the Abbé Portal its guiding spirit, of the Malines conversations which sought to reunite Anglicans and Catholics behind the back of the English Hierarchy. It was doomed to failure, because Lord Halifax had created the impression that all Anglicanism was really Catholic, but it was only the stubbornness of the English hierarchy preventing reunion. The debate in Parliament over the reform of the Prayer Book was sufficient evidence of the substantial Protestant body in the CofE, and all Cardinal Bourne of Westminster had to do was to send a copy of Hansard to Rome (Hansard is the minutes of what happens in Parliament) to finish the movement off.
    Perhaps Mercier was simply naive.
Love your blog, by the way. Keep up the good work!

  2. Thanks for the wonderful blog John.
But I think people are really starting to question (and quite frankly dislike) you putting "the Great" after every single person you mentioned on this blog. Apart from this, great blog!
