Papal Vestments Lost in the Name of Liturgical "Renewal"

These photos were taken today of Catholic bishops in Rome. Nice to see the Catholic Eastern rites preserving Catholic traditions whereas Catholic Westerners have not always been so keen on doing the same.

A great poverty of the so-called liturgical renewal was the loss of the lovely Byzantine rite customs / traditions which the Church in Her wisdom had incorporated over the centuries into the papal rites (i.e. tiara, rationale, fistula, etc.). Then these traditions (called by VII "certain features") went out the window during and after the Council because over the passage of time they had "crept" into the rites (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, 62).

While the Council bashed the Roman rite and called for its "need to adjust" and "revision", it praised the Byzantine rite and called for its preservation: "All Eastern rite members should know and be convinced that they can and should always PRESERVE their lawful liturgical rites and their established way of life, and that these should NOT BE ALTERED EXCEPT BY WAY OF AN APPROPRIATE AND ORGANIC DEVELOPMENT. Easterners themselves should honor all these things with the greatest fidelity. Besides, they should acquire an ever greater knowledge and a more exact use of them. If they have improperly fallen away from them because of circumstances of time or personage, let them take pains to return to their ancestral ways" (cf. Orientalium Ecclesiarum, 6).

  1. Was this liturgy presided over by the new Patriarch? If so, any pics?

  4. Very nice. The Easterns seem to have the right idea. Although I prefer mitres to crowns, but that's just me.

  5. Not a renewal, but total destruction. Paul VI was the instigator.
But John Paul II during 26 years, and Benedict XVI now thru nearly 6, has done nothing to discredit all that Paul VI did and stood for.

  6. "NOT BE ALTERED EXCEPT BY WAY OF AN APPROPRIATE AND ORGANIC DEVELOPMENT". What is your explanation then why the hierarchy contradicted itself in violating just that in the Latin Church?

  7. "Organic development"? Never saw that in that was done to the Latin Rite in haste.

  8. I have always been bewildered by Vatican II - they did wonders for us, and destroyed the Roman Rite. Some days in my more cynical moods I wonder if the East is only accepted because people are trying to be liberal. I would rather the integrity of the Eastern Rite be accepted because people are trying to be orthodox.

  9. the church never started with imperial robes to begin with and the apostles never wore them either , IT WA NEVER AN APOSTOLIC TEACHING NOR AN APOSTOLIC ATTIT
UDE ; To say that preserving these thing is more important than opening itself to people is all rubbish, the approach of the latin rite to people is different than the eastern rite and thats what the holy spirit wanted, people should start trusting the holy spirit because HE was there in VAtican II
