Calgary: Keeping Catholic Street Names

This has been a battle, as seen especially in Quebec. Even in Rome, sadly, the Via Boniface VIII near the Vatican was renamed Via Gasperi. These things will get more difficult. We have already lost, in many places, the little ground we have left. Today the new mayor of Calgary is a Muslim. Will things get easier?

  1. The Roman street is undoubtedly named after Cardinal Pietro Gasparri, the man who was largely responsible for the codification and harmonizing of centuries of discordant ecclesiastical laws.

  2. Hard to agree with you on this one. I'm a Traditional Catholic but also a Chinese Canadian. I enjoy Canada's racial and religious diversity. The fact that Calgary has a Muslim mayor and that the former opposition leader's wife is Chinese (Olivia Chow) should be celebrated. Long live Canada!

  3. Alcide De Gasperi was an Italian statesman and politician and founder of the Christian Democratic Party.

  4. The current mayor, a Muslim, does not permit downtown (churches) to expand. A bit odd, eh?

  5. The problem with "diversity" in North America is that it does not include Catholicism in its definition.

Voltaire on tolerance is in some part to blame for this, as can be seen in the aftermath of the implosion of Catholic life (and moral teaching) in Quebec.
