Decollatione S. Ioannis Baptistae (Beheading of St. John the Baptist) in Canada

St. John the Precursor reproached Herod for his unlawful union. He was then beheaded. Let this be a lesson for us today.

From the Roman Missal for August 29: "I spoke of Thy testimonies before kings, and I was not ashamed."

The great Canadian, Fr. William Ashley, celebrated Solemn High Mass in the Usus Antiquior at the talk of the town - Vancouver's newest church, the gorgeous church of the Assumption in Port Coquitlam.

Many thanks to the celebrated celebrant, as well as to the kind pastor, Fr. Ron Thompson, for his wonderful hospitality. And to the seminarians from Mission and the fine choir and servers. And to the fine deacons - one who is the youngest priest in the Archdiocese of Vancouver, the gifted Fr. Pablo.

Such a lovely way to end the summer.

And an effective way to introduce the lay faithful to our liturgical patrimony - with baby spoonfuls. In a parish setting. On a weekday. This is how it's done. With treats in the vestibule after.

The raiment of sanctity in this rite is a bold display of Catholic spirituality - and kids, parents, and young families are in need. We have never been in more need of the past. Remember this. And rejoice.

Chimney in Sistine Chapel

People on tour in the Sistine Chapel are often interested to know where the chimney is placed in the rear of the chapel, seen here in 1978. It is installed during the Sede Vacante, after a pope passes, and taken down, after the election.

What is Wrong with this Picture?

A kitchen table is the daily Mass "table" inside the tabernacle chapel of a prominent local monastery.

I complained to a monk, dressed in lay clothes, who laughed and explained that the monks only want one "altar" in the church, and thus the dining room table.
