Unfortunately, it seems that the cope worn by Paul VI has been shortened and cut ! May be there several copes of the same pattern as many were used (I don't know how many)for pontifical masses and papal chapel ? Could anyone identify the papal coat of arms ?
It is the same one. Joannes XXIII arms.
The coat of arms is that of John XXIII. If the cope was altered, it would be a shame. No doubt, there were others more suited in size that could have been used; even transferring the coat of arms if desired.
And BXVI is a short pope. What if the next pope is tall? Italian mindlessness.
I cannot believe that I did not see this at first glance: Paul VI is wearing the papal mantum; Benedict XVI, a cope. The mantum, a vestment larger than the cope, was reserved to the Holy Father. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries the immantatio, or bestowal of the mantum on the newly elected pope, was regarded as specially symbolical of investiture with papal authority:"I invest you with the Roman papacy, that you may rule over the city and the world" were the words used in conferring it at the Papal Coronation. That's another reason why this papal vestment - the mantum - should not have been altered and turned into a cope!
By the way the cope folds in the end, I would say it was not cut, but folded to the inside and stitched. Lets hope I am right, as it would be a shame to damage such an art piece!
I thought the mantum was a big version of the alb.
I think you are referring to the Falda?
Perhaps it was hemmed, which can always be reversed later. Not every Vicar of Christ is the same size, etc. Or would we prefer the Pontiff to trip? Sometimes Traditionalists remind me of Pharisees!
To trip? The mantum was obviously held up when walking. Hemmed? Um, you kind of have to know the Italians.
Ever since Paul VI, every little thing which destroys our Catholic heritage has been done. In this way the traditions of the Church of Rome have been slowly, stealthily, and strategically removed and obliterated. The reason for this is up to the reader to decide, but the fact of it cannot be denied. A vampire cannot stand to look at the cross for a reason - the same reason the bishops and priests of the New Order Church hiss and turn away before the holy things of God's Church.
